Mashq Records is a media, podcast and music house from Jammu & Kashmir. Founded in 2016 by award-winning broadcaster RJ Umar Nisar, it has grown into the valley's most-heard platform for credible conversation, culture and music — recorded in Kashmiri, released for the world.

Who we are

The practice of listening,
made into a studio.

*Mashq* means the patient practice of the calligrapher — the stroke repeated until it sings. We've carried that idea into audio since 2016, when Mashq Records became Kashmir's first ever podcast. Today the studio has produced more than 500 episodes — many recorded entirely in Kashmiri — on the issues that shape the valley: mental health, youth empowerment, climate change and child rights.

The voice behind Mashq

Hosted by RJ Umar Nisar

Born in Tral, Pulwama and based in Srinagar, Umar is among India's leading podcasters — a three-time UNICEF national award winner, a TEDx speaker and a radio jockey. He founded Mashq Records in 2016 as Kashmir's first podcast, and has hosted everyone from the Chief Minister of J&K to grassroots artists.

His work earned the Best Content honour at the Radio4Child Awards in 2022 and 2024, and a UNICEF partnership during the pandemic to spread vaccine awareness. The intent runs through everything the studio releases: media made by Kashmiris, for everyone willing to listen.
